In nihonga we use iwa-enogu, mineral colors made from pulverized mineral stones, with nikawa glue added for adhesives to paint on the canvas of washi. Washi has been used for approximately 2000 years and its permanence is highly regarded. Iwa-enogu also radiates brilliant rays of color and has a long history of over 1400 years. The painting technique is similar to those of tempera but the finish has a characteristic texture of nihonga which is produced by the combination of iwa-enogu, nikawa glue, and water. Oil painting was familiar to me from my early age, but a little over 10 years ago I became fascinated by iwa-enogu and started to paint nihonga. Since then the brush in my hand moves in a more lively fashion and inspires creativity. With color and form I hope to express the inner essence of landscape and flowers and not limit myself to simple depiction. I am very pleased with this second opportunity to hold an exhibition in New York and also interested in how my nihonga will be accepted by New Yorkers, who are well versed in art. I would much appreciate your visit to the Gallery.
